Ekopoli (Monopoli Ekonomi) Board Game: SAMCGI and Yayasan Pendidikan Astra Michael D. Ruslim Collaborate to Revolutionize Learning
Adaptation of Learning through Modern and Cultural Approaches
Jakarta, Indonesia (28/10/2025) – A collaboration between SAMCGI and the Yayasan Pendidikan Astra Michael D. Ruslim (YPA-MDR) has sparked new joy by introducing innovative learning ideas. Ekopoli, a board game inspired by the iconic Monopoly, offers students a novel experience in learning economics.
The concept, first introduced by a teacher from one of YPA-MDR’s supported schools, was reimagined by SAMCGI into what would become Ekopoli. This educational medium is designed to help students easily grasp economic principles. The game provides in-depth learning on economic concepts while maintaining an element of fun through its unique and colorful design.
This program is one of the outcomes of the CSR initiatives carried out by YPA-MDR. The goal of this program is to support the development of education and the prosperity of communities throughout Indonesia.
Together, SAMCGI and YPA-MDR are transforming the way economics is taught. Their innovative board game turn a traditionally complex subject into a fun and culturally engaging learning experience, a game that’s both entertaining and educational.
The original concept was creatively revamped by SAMCGI, incorporating a unique cultural element: the Dayak tribe of East Kalimantan. This choice was especially meaningful, as the idea for the game originated from a teacher in East Kalimantan and was designed for students in the same region. Featuring Dayak traditional clothes on the player tokens not only makes the game visually appealing but also helps students connect with their local heritage. The different colors and designs of each board space, corresponding to Dayak cultural groups, make the game more enjoyable and interactive.
The SAMCGI team worked to transform the provided mockup concept into a modern game without abandoning the cultural elements of East Kalimantan. This effort evolved into a cartoonish style that makes the players feel happy while playing. The cartoonish impression strengthens the sense of closeness between YPA-MDR and the students.
The collaboration between SAMCGI and YPA-MDR has successfully enhanced economic learning for students. The principles embedded in the game are specifically tailored to help students understand the economic system, particularly focused on production, distribution, and consumption.
The concept of the game is simple and easy for students to follow. A narrator acts as a wise and fair moderator, guiding the flow of play. The game begins with a dice roll, after which assigned groups or tokens embark on a mission to find answers. Completed missions are verified by the narrator, and play continues until a group reaches the Finish line. The first player earns 100 points, with each subsequent player receiving 10 points fewer.
Ekopoli features three main card types: Mission and Answer Cards pose questions about economic activities, with the answers presented as images or statements, located on a dedicated side board; Activity Cards are worth 10 points each and are acquired by players either directly from the game board or upon completing missions; finally, Mystery Cards introduce elements of fate or represent the negative consequences of making an unwise decision or failing a mission.
Ekopoli is one of nineteen board games resulting from the partnership between SAMCGI and YPA-MDR. Following the project’s success and client satisfaction, four of the nineteen games were selected for replication upon the project’s completion.
